History of the Cathedral

of Florence

Art and Exhibition Hall of the

Federal Republic of Gemany, Bonn

Completed: 2013

For an exhibition about the city of Florence in the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2014, the Digital Design Unit of the Technical University of Darmstadt produced a virtual reconstruction of the architectural history of the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.

The reconstruction was presented as a 3D stereo film. The film traces the development from the late antique predecessor building of Santa Reparata to the construction of Filippo Brunelleschi’s dome, whereby Brunelleschi’s building machinery is shown in motion. The film ends with the architectural history of the main facade, which was only completed in the nineteenth century. Various drafts that were not carried out were also simulated.

For this project Architectura Virtualis wrote the script, developed the 3D scenarios, and did the film cut.
